The Scoop

So, Thursday...

Those Kusama obliteration stickers are taking over.

I think because I look at it nearly every day I haven't really noticed how much the white has disappeared from that room. I guess it's like watching your own hair grow. I only noticed how much more colourful it was when I looked at the last pictures I took.

Apparently Amanda Palmer did a ninja gig today. I had lunch at the time that she played, but I happily hid out inside with my book. I just wasn't into participation at lunchtime.

Luckily I didn't wander off, becuase Laura came to find me to bring me this beautiful Holga. She's totally my awesome camera supplier. It came in it's original box, with a cute poster, and for some reason, tape. If anyone can explain the tape to me I'd appreciate it. I'm ordering some film now so hopefully I'll have it in time for my Sydney trip at the end of the month. Hooray!

You Got Nothing I Want

I've been trying to enjoy my days off, but last night I was lying in bed and it hit me just how soon my lease was up on my current place. I haven't even thought about packing, let alone actually started. And there has been no proper househunting happening. I've been doing a bit of looking on real estate websites, but must admit I haven't been very motivated. I haven't been going to any open houses or inspections. To be honest, it's all been rather disappointing. There's a lot of crap out there in my price range, and I'm worried that even when I do find the perfect place I'll get overlooked by a professional couple who have double the amount of money to contribute.

I've had a couple of offers from people to live with them, but I really want to try this living alone thing. Not only am I a grumpy person who needs quiet and solitude, I kind of also want to prove to myself that I can do it.

This is yet another one of those things that I told myself I'd worry about in the new year.. and hello.. it's January.

(And no, that picture is not my messy yard. Although, being an apartment dweller, I'd kill for a yard, even if it was as overgrown and weedy as that one.)

Hotter Than Hell

Ugh, summer. I'm really not dealing well with this heat. It's such a love/hate thing with me and this season. I hate feeling hot, I get sunburnt easily, work is always super busy. I hate the beach. Well, I hate sand, but love swimming in the ocean, but I think that might just be a by-product of growing up in a beach town and not having a swimming pool. I hate summer clothes, open toed shoes, and having the sun stream in my windows before 5am. I like hot tea, cardigans, wooly scarves, and not having to use the air conditioning.

BUT! Most of my favourite memories are from summers. Hanging out with my family at Christmas, road trips, and lazy afternoons with friends.
And of course there was that one year where, thanks to spending a whole season in another hemisphere, I managed to experience three summers in one year. Wonderful memories, but I didn't get to wear a single coat all year!

I've finally got a day off to do some major catching up on my to-do list (which is more like a book full of post-it notes). It's already 4.30 in the afternoon and I've barely touched it. I should probably prioritise with some of the things that are on that list of resolutions. I think some epic long overdue emailing, cutting out some colours and packing should be the most productive way to spend the rest of this afternoon. And drinking more water, of course.

She Said, She Said

Happy 2012!
I've been working over the New Years break, which has been good for the wallet. It was fairly quiet over the weekend, so I can't complain too much. Especially since the neighbours decided to have a fairly quiet night and let me get to sleep by 11pm. As much as I love the fresh starts that come along with the new year, I really hate the forced fun that people expect with New Years Eve. And don't even get me started on the crowds if I'm ever brave (stupid) enough to head into town on that silly night.

Here's some resolutions that will probably last two weeks, tops:

Blog at least every time I have days off.

Work on artwork at least every time I have days off.

Photo a day.

Go to Perth.

Make an effort to do more PROPER exercise.

Try a new recipe every month.

Drink more water.

Send more mail & email.

Make a dedicated studio/creative space when I move.

So far, the photo a day has been quite fun. You know, two days in. And the water consumption is going well apart from all the extra bathroom breaks. I might even do some exercise tomorrow. Maybe.

Always On My Mind

Most days I love my job. Today was not one of those days. On the upside, though, it does provide for some amazing people watching opportunities.

Today I witnessed:

A girl who looked 50, but upon closer inspection I decided she was about 16.

A guy with fabulous Tim Burton hair.

A nice young man pushing his grandmother around lovingly in a wheelchair.

A face that I thought I recognised, then realised that the person just has a really generic face. Then I felt bad.

A young girl in a gorgeous vintage dress. Then I saw her mother and understood how the child was dressed so beautifully.

What appear to be in fashion at the moment: short shorts, mullet skirts, bright suede platform sandals (love!), and lots of tattoos.

Also the obligatory kids: bored kids, hyperactive kids, well behaved kids, and kids that make me want to wish infertility upon everyone.

I also had a massive ideas explosion at about 3.37pm(ish). All I could think about was an artwork I wanted to make for the upcoming exhibition with my work peeps (which isn't until August, but they're starting to organise already... OMG!). It's fairly simple, but it will require me to start up another blog or website... probably a blog... I'm totally not talented enough for a website. The only thing is, because of the nature of it, I won't be able to sell it. And I'm pretty sure nobody would want to buy it anyway. Not that this worries me, but it was nice last year to get a little bit of money back to cover gallery costs, materials, and the ridiculous amount of M&Ms I bought. It's also fairly small and portable, which is much better than the sculpture idea I had because I need to move house in a month or so. The thought of packing up all the ridiculous amounts of crap that I own PLUS some half done sculptures was not a pleasant one.

OK, time to go pull my potato bake out of the oven and then try and fit a Maxibon in somewhere. I've got to do all this crazy eating before those healthy new year's resolutions start.

I Feel Possessed

Let me start by saying that I'm not a cook and this is not a food blog. I started this blog as a way to force myself to be creative every day, and even though I don't blog that regularly, it has helped me.

I had an urge to cook something new today, so I went through my recipe books to find something simple, yet delicious. I decided on an onion relish recipe from Donna Hay.
I don't know why I felt the need to photograph the process, but once I started I couldn't stop until my dinner was on my plate.
I think I might continue to do this. Photographing my food made me really aware of what I was eating, and documenting it here makes me more accountable for all the things that I'm putting in my mouth. Making my food nice to look at also made me appreciate what I was eating, rather than just eating blindly while watching TV.

The recipe said that it would make 1.25L of relish, so I halved the ingredients, thinking that it would still be too much for me, but I could take it to work and share it around. I may have reduced it too much because I only ended up with about a jar full, but it tastes amazing, so I don't really care if I did something wrong.

I think my Dad would be proud that I'm finally able to cook a steak properly.

And guess who's having delicious leftovers at work tomorrow? ;)

Didn't See It Coming

This will be a quick one since I've got dinner on the stove.. which for some reason I've taken a bunch of pictures of. Which means I've been either very inspired or very bored lately.

I've had a few late nights of collage making over these last few days. It's something I always did as a kid.. I guess because I wasn't really talented in the way of drawing or painting and found it was a way to express myself creatively. To me it never seemed a legitimate art form as it is just taking other people's work and arranging it in a different way (like a DJ!), but I was inspired to make a giant engagement card for an amazing couple (mainly because I couldn't find anything that was as awesome as them in the shops). After that one project I haven't been able to put the scissors down...
